From the ashes of his family’s legacy, Brutus formed the Runners: a clandestine network of elite couriers who traverse the cities unseen, delivering critical messages where pigeons and whispers fail. But Brutus is more than a messenger—he’s the People’s Blade, an urban assassin who now strikes down oppressors and corrupt elites in the name of justice and vengeance. During the last insurrection, the King and other nobles used their Court Wizards to intercept and lull carrier pigeons so they might uncover the plans and messages of their conspirators, before sending them to continue their message as planned. This almost single handedly thwarted the rebellion, and ultimately led to the destruction of the proud Valentius family; a minor family of Grimhelm with weapons manufacturing as their pedigree. Accused of supplying arms to the rebels, the entire family was rounded up and publicly executed by a firing squad, made an example of before the people. Brutus, the youngest son of only fourteen years, was the sole survivor of this slaughter, spared only due to him bunking off the academy to go rooftop racing with friends. He returned home to find it ransacked, and learned that his family was scheduled to be executed only days later.
He watched in horror as his mother, father, brother and sisters were riddled with lead before a cheering crowd, some of them still writhing in agony on the ground before they were finally silenced. Days later he would find out that it all stemmed from an intercepted carrier pigeon, revealing they were asking for payment from a local rebel cell for an ammo shipment. Brutus and his friends then devised the Runners, a group of couriers and messengers that would carry the most important messages of the realm across the cities, unseen and unstoppable, bounding from rooftops and trees and charging a premium for it. Yet for Brutus this was a personal vendetta, one that slowly boiled in his blood and could not be sated by merely darting past the eyes of the Crown and delivering messages for their enemies. He wanted to draw his own blood.
Using his skills as a runner, he thus became the People’s Blade, first enacting his vengeance against those who saw his family face the firing squad. Eventually he began moving against other targets of oppression: slaver’s, wealthy bankers, weapon’s manufacturers, all people who held the status quo. His finances still came in the form of his Running operation, and in the current political climate it has become more lucrative than ever. With a bag of coin paid to him by Madame Octavia, he has ensured his runners keep the constant chatter of the rebels in the city connected, while he himself begins targeting key people who hinder their cause, his latest target being High Inquisitor Cirilia who is overseeing the Inquisition’s operations in Grimhelm. Though getting close to a woman like that is no easy feat, let alone sinking a blade into her back.
